Contemporary: 1990s: Power

Political power struggles defined the 1990s, like many other decades. But for the first time images of violence were available live 24 hours a day on all news stations like CNN. War became a visual medium. How did this impact art making? Like many other people, artists were affected by the immediacy of worldwide events. They responded with their artworks. More than ever, art became an arena where social issues could be examined and prevailing ideas challenged.

To explore artworks and ideas from the 1990s, head to the 5th floor of the David and Vivian Campbell Centre for Contemporary Art.
