Contemporary: 2000s: Globalism

People, money, goods and ideas move at great speeds across the world thanks to huge advances in communications and technology. The art world's responses to this new global community are as divided as the rest of society. Some artists take on globalism by tackling large issues such as consumerism, political power and the increasing divide between the rich and the poor. Other artists resist it by focussing on local and very personal subjects. Globalism has also opened up the art market to artists from all over the world, challenging the domination of the Western European and North American art centres.

To explore artworks and ideas from the 2000s, visit to the 5th floor of the David and Vivian Campbell Centre for Contemporary Art.
