National Docent Symposium

Crossing Borders: Building Cultures

Art Gallery of Ontario; October 14 – 17, 2009; Toronto Ontario Canada

The Symposium Steering Committee and the Art Gallery of Ontario are pleased to invite you to Toronto, Canada for the 2009 National Docent Symposium. This year’s theme is "Crossing Borders: Bridging Cultures."

From performance art to political controversy, public outreach to digital media, join us as we explore our work as docents and educators.

The newly transformed Art Gallery of Ontario, designed by internationally renowned Toronto native Frank Gehry, will host this four-day event. In a city known for its extraordinary diversity, we anticipate a thought-provoking, exciting program that will broaden our horizons and enrich our work.

Plan to join us in Toronto and help make this a memorable and productive occasion!

About the National Docent Symposium

The National Docent Symposium is a nonprofit organization incorporated in California. The National Docent Symposium Council is committed to providing a forum uniquely designed to acknowledge the interests of docent educators.

Since 1981, the Council, composed of representatives from eight regions across the United States and Canada, has met annually to conduct its business and insure the continuity of current and future symposia. Regional representatives as well as past, present, and future host-community chairs sit on the Council. The organization currently has 28 directors.

The National Docent Symposium offers opportunities to explore innovative programs that encourage community and regional partnerships as well as the study of effective communication skills and cutting-edge technology. Symposia sites alternate by geographical region and are held every other year. Symposia attendees include volunteer docents and staff from a variety of institutions: art museums, natural history museums, science museums, ethnic museums, botanic and zoological gardens, historic homes and other cultural sites.
