Aimia | AGO Photography Prize 2013
Art Gallery of Ontario
September 11, 2013 – January 5, 2014

Every autumn, the Art Gallery of Ontario mounts an exhibition of works by the four artists shortlisted for the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize. Visitors are invited to view artwork by each artist, watch video interviews with the artists, and vote for their choice to win the $50,000 prize.

The four artists selected as finalists for the 2013 Aimia | AGO Photography Prize – Edgardo Aragón from Mexico, LaToya Ruby Frazier from the United States, Chino Otsuka from Japan and Erin Shirreff from Canada – have all produced bodies of work that share thematic similarities. These include overt or subtle autobiographical references, considerations of the meaning of home or homeland, and reflections on the passage of time. As a group, these artists blend the documentary, conceptual and formalist traditions in their explorations of both still and moving imagery. Together, the artists represent a snapshot of current directions in photography and video in which images are used to create powerful, complex and often ambiguous narratives.
