Arctic Spirit: 50th Anniversary of Cape Dorset’s Kinngait Studios
July 18 — November 8, 2009
This October marks the 50th anniversary of Cape Dorset’s famed Kinngait Studios, an internationally renowned printmaking centre founded by the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in 1959. Since Kinngait Studios emerged, Cape Dorset has been widely known as the Inuit art capital of the world. Located on the southwest tip of Baffin Island, the West Baffin Co-operative has been continually active producing ever newer generations of artists.
The AGO marks this half-century milestone with an exhibition of exemplary prints that were released in 1959, as well as small number of sculptures from the same period. The exhibition will also include sculptures and large drawings by a group of rising young stars. The photographic work of Toronto-based artist John Reeves, a frequent traveler to Cape Dorset, completes the exhibition.
The exhibition is on display in the Sarick Gallery.
