Art for Humanity’s Sake: Art Education and Social Justice
Saturday March 23, 2013
10 am - 3 pm
Audience: Senior Elementary and Secondary Educators
Art educator Tom Anderson states, “the core of art is fundamentally about the state being human, and what that means, as communicated from one human being to another.” Social justice art education emphasizes the use of dialogue and the making of visual and media artworks to promote social equity and resist bias or discrimination based on a person’s race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity or ability. Artists represented in the AGO’s collection, like Kent Monkman, Jenny Holzer, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres, will be highlighted. Participants in this workshop will explore creative actions and critical advocacy, aimed at an understanding of art for humanity’s sake. Each participant will receive a substantial resource package as part of this session.
