Art From Art: Copying, Appropriation, & Excavation as Original Expression

Saturday April 13, 2013
10 am - 3 pm

Audience: Elementary and Secondary Educators

Art educator Terry Barrett claims, “all art is about other art.” What role should copying play in visual|media arts curriculum? How are artists inspired or affected by art of the past? How and why do many contemporary artists appropriate or borrow other artist’s works? What are some of the ethical issues involved with appropriation? This workshop will explore the breadth of creative, critical, and conceptual thinking opportunities that are available through the convention of appropriation. The AGO’s collection will be used to instigate original acts of appropriation through art making. Participants will receive a substantial resource package as part of this session.
