ART TORONTO 2013 Opening Night Preview
Art enthusiasts, collectors, artists and gallerists celebrated the launch of Art Toronto 2013 during the Opening Night Preview on Thursday, October 24. This year, Art Toronto featured over 110 international galleries as well a large-scale installation by Toronto based artist and curator Thom Sokoloski titled ALL THE ARTISTS ARE HERE. To mark the opening night guests were treated to an exclusive performance of Relating to Geography #2 (Toronto Art Fair) by Victoria Stanton and Johannes Zits as well as a sneak peek of The Disorganizers present: “Disorganization #32: Create a collection of disorganized fashion (presented in a disorganized fashion)” by Kurt Bigenho, courtesy of p|m Gallery.
An annual highlight of the Opening Night Preview is the acquisition of contemporary works of art at the Fair to enhance the AGO's permanent collection. The Gallery's selection committee chose five new works by four Canadian artists, including Untitled #59 by Karel Funk; This and That by Anthony Burnham; Celia Perrin Sidarous's Eight Cubes on their Own and Eight Cubes with Ceramics; and Shovelling Worlds by Shuvinai Ashoona. The purchases were made possible by funds raised at the Preview, with assistance from the Dr. Michael Braudo Canadian Contemporary Art Fund and the Chalmers Art Fund. The Preview raised over $285,000 this year to support these acquisitions as well as the Gallery's ongoing education programs.
Thank you to co-chairs Cathy Bisset-Parkes and Kelly Driscoll and to our dedicated committee for all of their efforts. Our warmest thanks to the sponsors and guests for supporting this important event.
