Fact or Fiction: Every Painting Tells a Story
September 8, 2017
1:30 in Walker Court

Carl Beam wrote, "My works are like little puzzles, interesting games. I play a game with humanity and creativity. I ask viewers to play the participatory game of dreaming themselves as each other. In this we find out that we're all basically human." Every painting tells a story and every story is viewed differently depending upon the viewer. This tour offers the opportunity to look more closely at the story told in various works of art while considering what is real , what is the painters intention and what becomes a story of our own. Paintings included will be by John Waterhouse, Fran Snyders, William Kurelek, and Carl Beam.

Throughout the ages, artists have attempted to depict the ineffable, finding inspiration in legends, myths and spiritual traditions. We will view sculptural artefacts stemming from ancient cultures, seventeenth century allegorical art, a nineteenth century romantic legend, and modern and contemporary depictions of transformation.

Florine Stettheimer
November 10, 2017
1:30 in Walker Court

In her paintings, as in her homes, Stettheimer gathered the best and the quirkiest spirits and energies-the collective genius of her time, gave them a whirl, and sent them spinning into the future. Join me and become her latest interesting guest.

Throughout Time: Madonna and Child to Mother and Child
December 8th, 2017
1:30 in Walker Court

The Madonna and Child is one of the most popular iconographic image of the Medieval and Renaissance periods of art and beyond. We will explore the depiction of the mother and child relationship by asking how does each artist capture this subject, does the artist succeed, and does art express emotion in a compelling way? The first encounter will be with a Spanish carving from 1166 AD and we will wander chronologically looking at a variety of artworks, materials, and styles.

Artful Conversation cannot accommodate school groups and ELL groups; such groups are strongly encouraged to book a private tour through our Group Sales Department. Please call 416-979-6608, email, or book online at
