Canadian Girls Say...

May 12 to September, 2010

Girl Guides of Canada – Guides du Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario are pleased to present a photography exhibition that speaks volumes about what girls care about in their communities.

Canadian Girls Say... is a groundbreaking project that empowers Canadian girls to use photography to explore and speak out about what they care about in their communities. Through the project, Girl Guide Members aged 5 to 17 from coast to coast used their “photovoices” to express what matters to them. From the hundreds of submissions received, Canadian girls told us they cared about issues ranging from citizenship and culture to health, safety, and the environment.

“I really enjoyed taking photographs for the Canadian Girls Say project,“ 13-year old Caroline Davey reflects. “Photography is a great way to re-experience your community in a positive way.“

This family-friendly exhibition located in the AGO’s free community gallery, Canadian Girls Say… features some 100 photographs as well as accompanying perspectives from the emerging young photographers. This project celebrates GGC’s 100th anniversary of inspiring girl greatness.

“Canadian Girls Say... reflects the cutting-edge and innovative programming that Girl Guides of Canada offers girls today,“ says Rebecca Tye, Girl Programs Coordinator. “Continuing in our hundred year tradition, we encourage girls to speak out and become active community leaders through relevant and creative means.“

“This project is a wonderful opportunity for the AGO to celebrate the creativity in our community and showcase important ideas and issues through the power of art,“ says Judy Koke, Deputy Director of Education and Public Programming.
