Audio Portraits In The Grange

These audio portraits were produced in connection with story collection for Arts Access at the AGO and [murmur] in the Grange in the spring of 2009. More audio portraits from the Grange were recently added from Fall 2010 interviews celebrating the 100th anniversary of University Settlement House on Grange Road.

Julia Grant: I follow my nose down every alley and I will cross the street to find a good story. My audio work has been heard on CBC Radio One, Third Coast Audio Festival website and [murmur] site-specific storytelling project in Toronto.

The 3 part sound composition Bing is a portrait of teacher Bing Fu and her ESL students enrolled in the LINC program at University Settlement. During my time with them, as well as sharing their classroom activities and their perspectives on immigration to Canada, they rehearsed a performance of "You and Me", the song from the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In Part 1, Bing reflects on her life as a teacher and her decision to come to Canada.

Harmonica by Susan Xia Yuechun

Part 2

Xianming Hu, a member of Bing's beginner class in the LINC program, is a Chemical Engineer from Nanjing, China. He recounts his experience at City Hall on September 11, 2001.

Translation from Mandarin by Bing Fu.

Part 3

Bing tells a charming story about learning a language and cultural misunderstanding, and her class reminds us that "You and me, we're from one world".

Susan Xia Yuechun & Xianming Hu

Two students from the beginner's class at the LINC program tell personal stories from their experience in the neighbourhood.

Susan tells the story of a dramatic encounter between beloved animals in Grange Park, and the human complicity in the violence and aftermath.

Xianming Hu was present for Mayor Lastman's announcement about which city won the competition for the 2008 summer Olympics. (hint: it wasn't Toronto).

Translation from Mandarin by Bing Fu.
