NEW! Art & Ideas: Discovering Digital Games
Wednesday, February 5 – Wednesday, February 26, 7 – 10pm (4 weeks)
Members $80 | Public $100
This four-week workshop will introduce you to new creative practices in video games. Come in with questions and we’ll introduce you to some existing art games and take you through how to create a simple video game for yourself. No previous gaming experience is necessary, although it is recommended to have an open and curious attitude about what games can be. Participants will need to bring their own Mac computers.
About the Artist Mentor and Course Instructor
Jim Munroe is a self-described “indie culture maker,” producing science fiction novels, designing indie videogames, and making lo-fi sci-fi films. Five years ago he co-founded The Hand Eye Society, a not-for-profit videogame arts organization, and currently serves as its executive director. As artist-in-residence at the AGO, Munroe will be working with the public to eliminate cultural barriers that surround “low-brow” art and encourage the production and celebration of videogames as a nascent art form.
Alex Leitch is a co-founder and advising director of Dames Making Games Toronto (DMG.to), an organization dedicated to increasing the participation of women in the game-making community. Her most popular game is Psychlepath, a game of cycle commuting in Toronto, produced for the TIFF Nexus project in 2011, and her most recent is Aneurysm, a mobile game about roommates and dishes. A programmer by trade, Alex is a candidate for a Master's of Design for her project ScreenPerfect, a game engine intended to make full-motion video narratives accessible to non-programmers. Alex is interested in how technology can be used to extend our ability to tell stories.
