Drawn to Satire: Selections from the AGO vaults

Exhibition dates

April 9 – August 7, 2016

Satirical drawings are among the AGO's most remarkable works of art. Characterized by an economical use of line, caricatures and cartoons rely on clever distortions of the human body and face for comic effect. While playful and witty, they can also be biting and cruel. This selection five drawings offers a glimpse of these amusing and disturbing commentaries on the human condition.

In 1976 the Trier-Fodor Foundation gave the Art Gallery of Ontario over 1100 works by the humorist and illustrator Walter Trier. The gift was accompanied by an endowment to support the acquisition and exhibition of humorous, satirical and illustrative graphic art.
