Going Green: Art and the Environment (Guided Gallery Visit)

Going Green: Art and the Environment (Grades 3 to 8)

How does the environment inspire artists? How do we interact with the environment? How can artists act as environmental stewards? Analyze how natural and human-made environments inspire artmaking and environmental activism.

Program Concepts:

 Students will explore…

  • Environment as Inspiration – How the environment acts as inspiration for art through materials, subject matter, and theme
  • Art as Activism – How artists intentionally and unintentionally respond to and advocate for environmental issues (e.g., global warming, industrialization, pollution)

Dedicated to providing a student-centred learning experience, we use questioning strategies based on the critical analysis process and fun, interactive activities such as looking games, critical thinking exercises, sketching, movement and drama, and tactile experiences.

Guided Gallery Visits have multiple curriculum links and explore works of art from the permanent collection and some special exhibitions. Education staff determine which galleries to visit based on the program concepts and what works of art are on view the day of your visit.  If there is a specific collection area or special exhibition you would like to see as one part of the larger visit, please inquire at the time of booking.

Going Green: Art and the Environment (Grades 9 to 12)

The AGO’s wide-ranging collection provides a visual record of peoples’ relationship with the natural world over centuries and across cultures. Examine how environmental issues of the past, present and future have been — and continue to be — an inspiration for artists.

Program Concepts:

  • Environment as Inspiration – How artists have been inspired by the environment by subject matter and materials creating images that are both realistic and idealistic
  • Human-Environment Interaction – How artists respond to peoples’ interaction with the natural world (cultural difference, environmental issues)

Guided Gallery Visits are a student-centred learning experience that use inquiry based questioning strategies that encourage students to share their opinions and ideas about art. Students participate in activities that are interactive and that encourage critical thinking and creativity in the galleries.

Guided Gallery Visits for secondary school students are cross-curricular and cross-collection.  Students will explore works of art from a variety of collection areas such as African, Canadian, Contemporary, and European.  If there is a specific collection area you would like your students to visit as part of the larger program, please specify at the time of your booking.
