Messaging and Meaning: Literacy and Literature (Grades 3 to 8)
How do artists communicate messages and tell stories using the elements and principles of design? How do stories and literature inspire artmaking and vice versa? Build your students’ visual literacy and exercise their creative writing skills.
Program Concepts:
Students will explore…
- Visual Literacy – How to analyze, interpret and make meaning of the messages and stories communicated by works of art
- Art and Literature – How artists are inspired by stories and literature to create works of art and how works of art can inspire creative writing
Dedicated to providing a student-centred learning experience, we use questioning strategies based on the critical analysis process and fun, interactive activities such as looking games, critical thinking exercises, sketching, movement and drama, and tactile experiences.
Guided Gallery Visits have multiple curriculum links and explore works of art from the permanent collection and some special exhibitions. Education staff determine which galleries to visit based on the program concepts and what works of art are on view the day of your visit. If there is a specific collection area or special exhibition you would like to see as one part of the larger visit, please inquire at the time of booking.
