A spectacular painting by Gaspar de Crayer is now making its AGO debut. Saint Benedict Receiving Totila, King of the Ostrogoths was painted in 1633 for the refectory of the Benedictine Abbey at Affligem, Flanders. There the monks would have dined while contemplating a well-known episode from the life of their order's founder. Active in Brussels, de Crayer was a highly successful court painter who was known for his altarpieces. Also on view in the gallery are two other religious paintings by de Crayer. All three works were the generous gift of Joey and Toby Tanenbaum.
