This course will allow students to gain an understanding of and appreciation for Inuit art and Inuit visual culture. In our consideration of this fascinating and meaningful part of Canadian art history, we gain insight into the different prevalent themes in Inuit art, and explore how Inuit art functions as a commodity and a cultural identifier. Throughout the course we will look at certain prevalent images and explore how ideology, mythology, religion, culture, and history function collectively in the Inuit works on display at the Gallery. Participants will also make an off-site visit to the Sprott collection of Inuit art during the course.
Rory has a Master of Museum Studies degree from the University of Toronto and has worked for over ten years in the arts and cultural sectors in the U.S. and Canada.
