This three-part workshop series takes place in the exhibition, responding to a selection of master works in three unique and diverse ways over three weeks. Learn to slow down the body and mind to discover new ways of looking at art.

The workshop series will be led by experts in their field: Ignatius Feaver and Maureen McDonnell will lead a session focused on Visio Divina; Jacques Oulé will guide students through Buddhist sittings; and YuMee Chung will capture the resonances between body and landscape through mindful movement.

About Visio Divina

Visio Divina (latin for ‘divine seeing’) is a method of prayer that involves the use of images and/or other media and invites participants to look at art objects with a contemplative gaze; to look with an open heart and mind. Beyond first impressions, judgements or understandings, visio divina helps to build an awareness of the deeper feelings, emotions and thoughts provoked by a work of art.

Ignatius Feaver is an artist, educator and Capuchin Franciscan; he holds a master’s degree in Religious Education from the University of St. Michael’s College, and a Diploma in Spiritual Direction from Regis College, University of Toronto. A main focus of his teaching and research is on spirituality and mysticism in the art of the nineteenth-century French lithographer and painter Charles-Marie Dulac.

Maureen McDonnell is Professor Emerita, Regis College. After receiving a BSc in Nursing in 1975 she worked in community health and advocacy, then went on to study theology and earn a Doctor of Ministry degree from Regis College, University of Toronto. As Director of the Spiritual Direction Formation Program there, she taught the art of spiritual direction and the formation of persons providing spiritual care.

About Buddhist Sittings

Disconnecting from technology, phone, camera … and applying various meditative techniques to settle the body and mind, let go of tensions, worries and all distractions we will connect and engage in a deep and intimate way with the art.

The guide for this session is Jacques Oulé, a French-born artist and practitioner of meditation. A student of Korean Zen master Samu Sunim, since 1986, Jacques has pursued a path of self-awakening, leading to his ordination as a Buddhist dharma teacher in 1997. Today he conducts regular meditation sittings and retreats, and reveals his spiritual explorations through his art.

About Mindful Movement

In this session you will explore the dynamic interplay between inner and outer landscapes as you view select mystical landscapes through the lens of mindful movement. Join yoga and meditation teacher, YuMee Chung on an experiential journey into body and breath, mind and movement, and discover how posture shapes perception and ultimately informs and enlivens the world we inhabit.

YuMee Chung is a former securities lawyer who left a busy practice to engage more deeply with life. More than a decade later, she has found her truest calling as a yoga and meditation instructor. Known for her uplifting, breath-driven classes, she is a teacher who speaks deftly to body, mind and spirit as she communicates about the most subtle and nuanced parts of the yogic journey with grace and earthy charm. YuMee is the creator of the Toronto Star’s popular yoga series, The Moves.

Students are asked to print out a copy of their receipt and arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class. The class will meet the instructor in the Weston Family Learning Centre Young Education Commons before proceeding together to the galleries. This course meets in the AGO's galleries. Participants must be 18 or older. Space is limited. Please read our policies when you prepare to register.
