Picasso said that every child is an artist. We believe this too. We take concepts that children love to explore- colour, light, texture - and build on those interests, encouraging exploration of paint materials such as watercolour, tempra, and acrylic and painting tools-both traditional and not so traditional. Painting 1, 2 and 3 are a series of three courses in which students are introduced to the fundamentals of fundamentals of painting, with each successive course building and adding to skills and techniques of the previous class. Courses will focus on building skills and confidence through the use and understanding of materials and processes in creating works of art. Introductory classes, and those for 6-9 year olds, have a less traditional, more inquiry based approach, combining more traditional methods with contemporary explorations. Techniques and concepts are often introduced through innovative projects. Throughout these courses, students explore a variety of brushes and techniques, colour theory, composition, paint application, brushwork and surface preparation, canvas stretching, as well as an understanding of the elements and principles of design. Representational and abstract styles are covered, as well as contemporary mixed media painting.
