Date Posted: October, 1, 2007
As the Art Gallery of Ontario prepares to enter the final phase of its expansion project, Westbank Corporation (Shangri-La) will sponsor the GalleryÂ’s closing weekend and offer free admission to the public on October 6 and 7.
This will be the final opportunity for visitors to see four remarkable exhibitions: Medieval and Renaissance Treasures from the Victoria and Albert Museum; Bernini in Focus; Hungry God: Indian Contemporary Art; and Treasures of the Tsimshian from the Dundas Collection.
“Westbank is very proud of its commitment to public art and its relationship with the AGO, which will create a better city through creative discussion,” says Bob Rennie, spokesperson for Westbank Corporation (Shangri-La).
Although the AGO will be closed until 2008 to complete the reinstallation of more than 5,000 artworks into 110 galleries, there are still plenty of ways for Gallery members and the public to stay connected during this final phase of expansion. The AGO’s Gallery School will provide a full slate of classes for adults and children at its temporary location at 60 McCaul Street. March Break camps and Teens Behind the Scenes youth programs will also continue to be available.
Over the last 40 years, the AGO’s Art Rental and Sales Gallery has offered an extensive selection of works from such celebrated Canadian artists as Jean-Paul Riopelle, Michael Snow and Ed Burtynsky, and will continue to do so in its current location at 481 University Avenue. Artwork is available for sale to the public, or can be rented out by AGO members for as little as $20 per month.
Highlights of the AGO’s permanent collection can be explored online through an innovative web initiative called Collection X (www.collectionx.museum). This fully interactive website also allows users to curate their own exhibitions and showcase their own work.
Meanwhile, the AGO’s website (www.ago.net) will provide live updates of ongoing construction on the building from two webcams, one facing north and the other facing south.
If you’re looking to broaden your horizons, the Travel AGO program will offer carefully planned itineraries that feature guided tours of art museums, artist studios and select private and corporate collections.
During the final stage of construction, the AGO is a Go volunteer team will be the public face of the Gallery, representing the AGO at multicultural festivals and community events throughout the GTA.
Westbank Corporation (Shangri-La) is the official sponsor of the AGO’s closing celebration events.
