AGO to Acquire First Cuban Work of Art

(Toronto: February 20, 2008) Postcapital, an elaborate work by renowned contemporary artist Carlos Garaicoa, will join the Art Gallery of Ontario's permanent collection as part of a five-year partnership between the AGO and Sherritt International Corporation. Over time the partnership will result in the formation of a Cuban art collection at the AGO.

The Art Gallery of Ontario has acquired Greg Girard’s House on Zixia Lu, #14 Zixia Lu, 2005; Annie Pootoogook’s Drawing My Grandmother’s Glasses, 2007; and Denyse Thomasos’s Metropolis, 2007, at this year’s Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF).
Free Admission for Closing Weekend at the AGO

AGO Receives Acclaimed Canadian Contemporary Sculpture

AGO Adopts New Citizens Through Art

The Art Gallery of Ontario is inviting new citizens to learn about Canada through art. The AGO is embracing these newcomers with a pilot project called “Citizen AGO,” the first of its kind in the country. As part of the first phase of the program, an AGO representative is attending select citizenship ceremonies from now through September. At these ceremonies, the representative will present new Canadians with a complimentary one-year family membership to the Gallery, which will offer them the chance to explore Canada through its rich artistic heritage.
Mark Lewis first recipient of the Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO

On May 31, photographer and filmmaker Mark Lewis will be jointly recognized by the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Gershon Iskowitz Foundation for his contribution to the visual arts in Canada. As a recipient of the 2007 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO, Lewis will receive a $25,000 award and his work will be featured in a temporary exhibition at the AGO in 2008.
Exhibitions Continue Until AGO Closes for Reinstallation

Some Programming Maintained Through Closure Period
The Art Gallery of Ontario will temporarily close effective October 8 to begin reinstalling art for its mid-2008 grand re-opening of the Frank Gehry-designed expansion. Until that date, the AGO will remain open with outstanding programming including Emily Carr: New Perspectives on a Canadian Icon (opening March 3) and the summer show, to include the newly acquired Bernini sculpture Corpus, the recently repatriated Dundas Collection and works from the Victoria and Albert Museum.
