The AGO’s library is a major Canadian resource for the advanced study of art history. In addition to supporting the Gallery’s art collections and programs, it is also used by art historians and curators, art dealers, auction houses, artists, journalists and post secondary students. Through an affiliation partnership, it is also the adjunct library for graduate students at OCAD University.

The library’s growing collection of approximately 200,000 volumes includes books, exhibition catalogues and museum publications; magazines, scholarly journals and museum bulletins; files on more than 55,000 artists, including at least 30,000 Canadian artists; catalogues from auction houses around the world; calendars, annual reports and other information from art museums worldwide, as well as online databases and resources. Its rare book holdings include art historical sources and illustrated books from the 1400s to the present.

The library’s holdings of Canadian art archives encompass the personal and professional papers of many leading Canadian artists, and the business papers of Toronto-based arts organizations such as A Space. Growing rapidly in scope and significance, these holdings include the papers of modern artists such as Barbara Astman, Iain Baxter&, Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Betty Goodwin, Suzy Lake, Robert Markle, David Milne, Christiane Pflug and Michael Snow. Important historical figures such as C.W. Jefferys, Lucius R. O’Brien and George A. Reid, as well as influential organizations from the early 20th century such as the Canadian Art Club, are also represented in the holdings. The AGO’s archives also document the history of the institution since 1900 in textual records, architectural plans, photographs and other media.
