Song Dong's Communal Courtyard: Drop-in Workshops
As you move through Song Dong's Communal Courtyard, you may encounter instructor led drop-in drawing and writing groups taking place within the installation. This installation, made up of 100 vintage Chinese wardrobe doors arranged into a series of oval “rooms” or “corridors”, invites the visitor into a space that evokes the surprise and incident of a walk in a dense urban space. Communal Courtyard, is part of Beijing artist Song Dong's long-running series The Wisdom of the Poor, which evokes the contemporary urban experience of global cities — from Beijing to Toronto—in which traditional architectures and ways of living together are threatened by rapid growth.
Join one of two featured drop-in workshops. In January, Art of Drawing, led by AGO's artist-instructor Kelley Aitken, invites you to experiment with the making of a group drawing in response to Song Dong's enveloping installation. In February, join Art of Writing where AGO's writer-instructor Lynn Crosbie guides you through a series of writing responses aimed to reflect and collect our unique ideas about the artwork. Presented in collaboration with University Settlement and Ontario College of Art and Design University.
Both workshops are free with admission – please arrive early to ensure a spot.
