Sketch It! Life and Art as Inspiration (Studio Visit)

Sketch It! Life and Art as Inspiration (Grades 9 to 12)

“Drawing is the basis of art. A bad painter cannot draw. But one who draws well can always paint.” – Arshile Gorky

Art starts with drawing. Students will be inspired to sketch and draw by the art, architecture and gallery visitors as they roam the expansive AGO galleries. Students will learn a variety of drawing techniques including gesture drawing and shading. Back in the studio, students develop their techniques and skills to refine their sketches into finished drawings using conté, charcoal, pastels or chalk.

Studio Visits take place in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School where students can exercise their personal creativity and create art in a 6,000 square feet open studio space. Students will be inspired by original sculptures displayed within a visible behind-the-scenes vault storage area located next to the studio. Working with experienced artist educators, students will experiment with traditional and non-traditional materials and techniques to create individual and collaborative works of art focused on the creative process.

Note: In an open studio environment, creativity can be a messy process!  Please ask students to wear comfortable clothing that is easily washable. Aprons are not provided.
