Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde (JK to Grade 12)
Available October 18, 2011 to January 13, 2012
The special exhibition Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde provides lush, colourful, and fantastical works of art by Marc Chagall and his contemporaries that explore storytelling and symbolism. Inspired by Chagall’s paintings and stained glass works, students develop their own visual language using symbols to share their own feelings, ideas and experiences. Students then create a sculptural work using non-traditional materials and apply their personal symbols through drawing and collage.
Studio Visits take place in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School where students unleash their creativity and create art in a 6,000 square feet open studio space. Students will be inspired by sculptures from the AGO’s permanent collection displayed within a visible behind-the-scenes vault storage area located in the studio. Working with experienced artist educators, students will experiment with traditional and non-traditional materials and techniques to create individual and collaborative works of art focused on the creative process.
Note: In an open studio environment, creativity can be a messy process! Please ask students to wear comfortable clothing that is easily washable. Aprons are not provided.
