November's First Thursday celebrates the opening of the blockbuster exhibition Mystical Landscapes: Masterpieces from Monet, Van Gogh and more with a roster of local artists working in performance that bring their own the magik content to the night.
Headlining the event is a showcase of Toronto's own 88 Days of Fortune Collective, with a headlining slot for genre-defying experimental act Witch Prophet as well as Lido Pimienta and Latasha Alcindor. The performance will be animated with visuals by SunSun / Francesca Nocera. They take the stage at 10 pm. Additional beats are supplied by DJ L’Oquenz in Walker Court, and DJ Amy Bowles and Christian Hamilton in Galleria Italia.
Artist projects include classically trained, rock-oriented violinist Edwin Huizinga who will work with contemporary dancer Jennifer Nichols on a performance within the exhibition; animating the landscapes by foregrounding the moving body and sound. Another version of landscape is explored by multi-generational collective No Object working with strategies of empathy and togetherness, through nudity. And finally, Readings by Artists will be a performative and interactive series of encounters with artists offering their interpretations of I Ching, moon sings and more.
The evening will also feature a series of pop-up talks, including one by 2016 RBC Canadian Painting Competition winner Brian Hunter, The Broadbent Sisters discussing their new publication A Telepathic Book, and Nico Mara-McKay (Psyche) Editor-in-chief, Spiral Nature Magazine, the monthly Out of the Vaults exhibition hosted by Volunteers of the AGO as well as surprise activations. As always, visitors can expect delicious themed food and drinks in the AGO's Night Market.
Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended as First Thursdays consistently sell out and tickets are not held back for at-the-door sales.
The AGO would like to extend its thanks to the sponsors who partner with us to bring you First Thursdays each month:
