October's First Thursday celebrates the opening of the landmark exhibition Toronto: Tributes + Tributaries, 1971-1989, featuring a dynamic collection of artists and collectives responsible for the development of our city's wide-ranging art scene. Headlining is the legendary Toronto hip-hop icon, and the artist who introduced the term ‘T-dot' to the world, Kardinal Offishall, with a DJ set on center stage in Walker Court at 10 p.m.
Each of this month's artists reflect on their own identity through a unique lens. Photographic artist Dainehsa Nugent-Palache addresses her Afro-Caribbean femininity through performative self-portraiture. Toronto's Krafty Queers presents Discover Toronto: A Drag Musical Living Anthology, highlighting Toronto's legacy through the eyes of Drag Queens, Kings, and everything in between. And the AGO's fall 2016 artist-in-residence Walter Scott will be presenting a work This is Not Prose, a candid take on "live art-making" that blurs the line between the public and private life of an artist.
Pop up Talks include the AGO's Assistant Curator, Canadian and Indigenous Art, Wanda Nanibush who curated the exhibition and who will offer remarks at different points inside Toronto: Tributes + Tributaries, 1971-1989, and don't miss a special selection of Out of the Vaults that compliments and expands upon the narrative of this exhibition as well.
As always, you can expect delicious themed food and drinks in the AGO's Night Market, while the beats to take you through the night's activities will be provided by DJ Ariel in Walker Court and DJ Mamma Knows in Galleria Italia. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended as First Thursdays consistently sell out and tickets are not held back for at-the-door sales.
The AGO would like to extend its thanks to the sponsors who partner with us to bring you First Thursdays each month:
