Volunteer Opportunities

Meet new and interesting friends, and be a vital part of one of the best art museums in Canada! We’ve got inspiring art, an impressive building, and dedicated volunteers. Applicants, like our existing volunteers, should posses a love and appreciation of art, a flexible attitude for dealing effectively with the public, basic computer skills (including email), and an understanding that reliability is key to success in any role.

Volunteers at the AGO number nearly 800 strong! Their time, enthusiasm and expertise contribute to an outstanding experience for museum visitors in all areas of the Gallery.

We post volunteer vacancies as soon as they become available. Check back often for a placement that better suits your skills and interests. Please note, we do update this site regularly.

Please note we do not offer high school co-op placements. If you have any further questions, you can contact us by email at

Volunteer Opportunities

Youth Council Volunteer

The AGO Youth Council works collectively to initiate programming by youth for youth, including exhibitions, public art projects, gallery events, and more. The main focus of the program is to allow youth to have a voice in how we drive youth visits to the Gallery, and to work on projects with artists to enhance and challenge the institution in various ways. The Youth Council engages in 2-3 major projects with artists each year. This is a hands-on, fast-paced program that gives participants a chance to work with local and international artists, advocates and activists on projects that reflect the concerns, interests and passions of people between the ages of 15 to 24. The council accepts new members every fall, and applicants are selected after a group interview involving current members of the AGO Youth Council. Please note: you must be 15 years old to apply. This opportunity is open only to youth volunteers, aged 15 – 24.

Commitment: You must be available Wednesday evenings in order to join AGO Youth Council. The group meets Wednesday evenings, approximately 5:30pm – 8:30pm, each week. Time Commitment: school year (November – June)

Application Deadline:  Monday, October 17

To apply, please fill out the online form.

Family Sundays Volunteer

Family Sunday volunteers must love children, first and foremost! You'll help with arts and crafts activities (restocking supplies, cutting and pasting), direct kids and families to different activity stations throughout the Gallery (and show them how to get there), and encourage fun, by modelling activities or helping kids complete projects one-on-one. Our programs & projects change on a monthly basis and are inspired by our current exhibitions! This is a great way to get involved on our busiest days each week.

Commitment:  We're looking for volunteers who can join us for approximately two Sundays per month, from 12:30 – 4:30pm. Our program runs November 2016 – April 2017.

Application Deadline:  Monday, October 17

To apply, please fill out the online form.

Exhibition Audio Guide Volunteer - Mystical Landscapes: Masterpieces from Monet, Van Gogh and More

In this role, you’ll welcome visitors, distribute guides (hand held, audio tour units – kind of like cell phones), demonstrate their use, and assist our visitors with downloading our exhibition app. You’ll enjoy this role most if you’re an art lover who likes working with the public in a team-based setting. Enjoy the excitement and crowds that a temporary, ticketed exhibition can bring! Receive free tickets to the exhibition, gallery discounts, and more!

Commitment: This is a temporary volunteer placement that runs the extent of the exhibition: October 15 – January 29, 2017. Training provided. Flexible options; various weekday and weekend shifts available (Tuesday – Sunday), morning, afternoon and evening. Please indicate your preferences on the volunteer application form.

Application Deadline:  Friday, October 21

To apply, please fill out the online form.

Note: we update this site as volunteer positions become available; please check back regularly.
