Volunteers at the AGO number nearly 800 strong! Their time, enthusiasm and expertise contribute to an outstanding experience for museum visitors in all areas of the Gallery.

HOW TO APPLY:

We post volunteer vacancies as soon as they become available. Check back often for a placement that better suits your skills and interests. Please note, we do update this site regularly.

ADULT Opportunities

Weekend Gallery Guide Volunteer

Gallery Guides roam as “ask me” guides across the galleries, to engage visitors and answer interpretive questions on the floor. They also offer short, pop-up art talks, as well as more structured tours. We’re looking for outgoing folks who aren’t afraid to initiate a conversation. We find volunteers who enjoy this role have a formal background in art, or a very strong interest and are willing to self-study. Our Gallery Guides are not given tour scripts, but instead have the freedom and flexibility to develop short talks and tours that interest them most.

Ongoing exhibition content and methodology training is provided, to support volunteers in this placement.

Commitment: This volunteer placement requires bi-weekly availability (i.e. you will be scheduled every two weeks). You’ll be able to choose from a regular Saturday or Sunday shift, morning or afternoon. Morning shifts run from 11 am – 2:30 pm, and afternoon shifts run 12:30 – 4 pm. In addition to a bi-weekly shift, volunteers attend twice-monthly training sessions on Tuesday evenings from 6 pm – 8:30 pm. This is an intensive and rewarding volunteer placement. A 3-month probationary/training period is observed before gallery guides join the regular program. We ask for a one-year commitment.

Application Deadline: Monday April 27
