Weighing… and Wanting is an exhibition of charcoal drawings and video projection, combining the terrains of medical imaging and geological mapping by internationally recognized South African artist William Kentridge. A truly interdisciplinary artist with a background in political science, philosophy, theatre and fine art, Kentridge funnels the conceptual and aesthetic concerns of these disciplines into his installations, which combine the projected and drawn image. Born in Johannesburg, Kentridge’s art developed against the graphic backdrop of apartheid. Weighing…and Wanting maps out personal histories of memory and forgetting onto representations of a barren Johannesburg landscape using the familiar archetypal characters that have inhabited his past animated films.

William Kentridge: Weighing … and Wanting is originated by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. This project has been made possible by a contribution from Michael and Brenda Sandler, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
